“Living in Los Angeles almost my entire life of 27 years, it is still a place that inspires with its sprawling mystery, revealing slowly, more and more as time passes, it's decaying beauty, and layers of contradiction.  When working on this drawing, I tried to keep in mind what keeps L.A. exciting to me in as pure and simple a way as possible: Los Angeles has always felt both obvious and subtle, serene and off kilter, opulent and almost embarrassingly, heartwarmingly
unaware of anything but itself.”

Sammy Harkham was born in Los Angeles and moved, at 14, with his family to Sydney, Australia where a wide range of local artists influenced his work.  He studied at Cal Arts, leaving to focus on his comics (he is the creator of Kramers Ergot, one of the most influential comics anthologies published today).  His comic strip, Poor Sailor, was included in  the Best American Nonrequired Reading of 2004 and has been published in several languages.  He is currently working on his comic series, Crickets, and deeply involved in Family Books, an innovative new shop on Fairfax Avenue.
